Paul McGinniss Work Business Life Coach

Spring has indeed sprung and there have been tremendous challenges in my work and life in the first quarter of 2010. We welcomed a baby boy into this world, we placed my wife’s mom into a long-term care facility, and we had to put Winter, her 15-year old Teacup Maltese, to sleep. Talk about challenges.

And that is what this News-you-can-use-letter is all about — helping you better deal with challenges: whether it’s layoffs in and around your life, a misalignment between your work and your passion, or the recently passed Health Care Reform Act!

Before leaping into this month’s content, I’d like to welcome all of our new readers/subscribers. Please feel free to share your thoughts, feedback, questions and ideas with me. My goal is to provide you with a newsletter that is both interesting to read AND useful.

Coach’s Corner
Pushing Past Obstacles

One of our readers had a comment on last issue’s column on Goal Setting/Achievement. He was wondering what the effects of downsizing in the workplace are on the remaining employees. He’s seen many co-workers fired or moving-on in the past few months and wonders whether this can act as a deterrent or obstacle to achieving one’s goals.

One of our primary “social needs” or triggers is the need for certainty. Knowing what is “coming next” calms us down. Uncertainty, on the other hand, trips our limbic system and shifts us to a more fight/flight mode. Anything that increases uncertainty will tend to increase this state.

Layoffs in and of themselves are difficult for employees AND companies to manage. But the WAY this is handled goes a long way toward a better or worse situation for all involved.

The more advance notice management can give of a serious situation and the prospect of layoffs, the more uncertainty they can eliminate. The challenge with this approach is it can “tip” management’s hand. Many companies would rather not share this type of news. By not giving advance notice and simply announcing layoffs, employees are taken by surprise and there is an immediate and usually strong negative response based on the  immediate increase in the level of uncertainty: everything was “fine” yesterday but today people are losing their jobs. “Am I one of them?” is the question that springs to mind for many employees. Uncertainty! To make matters worse, many companies communicate very poorly (creating even more uncertainty). In the worst cases, companies don’t cut deep enough so a continuing series of layoffs occur which heightens the state of uncertainty. Employees are consumed with when will “the next shoe drop” and too much energy is wasted on imagined scenarios.

In this state, few people will think of self-actualizing (can you blame them). Folks will either ignore the situation and hope they’re not affected OR fight whatever change is occurring and try to hold on to whatever ground they can.

What to do?

As an individual, work on creating some level of certainty for yourself: work on what you CAN work on, perform your job well, update your resume, get back in touch with your network, talk to informed sources in and outside of your company, set aside some time to focus on your goals.

For a company, determine the trade-off between the potential value/cost of communicating/not communicating with your employees. Minimize the level of uncertainty as much as possible. Doing so will make a smoother and more productive transition for all.

Ask the Coach!

“Hey Paul, I’ve got this situation…”

Question: What if your business is what you do to make money but it is not your passion. How does one stay motivated then?

Coach: Great question — and one that is probably true for many readers. I’ll answer the question in two “Ways.”

SUGGESTION: Way One is to move toward doing what you love as your work. That means to research different options or paths you can pursue to better align your passion with your work. My father once said, “If you can’t be a rock star — be a drum technician, own a recording studio, work in a music store, sell ad space for a music magazine…” You know, get near the heat!

Way Two is to use your work to fund the pursuit or practice of your passion until your work is your passion. Lower (yes, lower!) your expectations of what work means to you in the short-term and accept your current reality: work is a means to an end, your sponsor to a better life, your passion underwriter.

I think the quicker you can accomplish Way One, the better. Way Two is harder because the bulk of our time is spent AT work. Unfortunately, more of us fall into the Way Two category: Way Two Tired, Way Two Bored, Way Two Uninspired (forgive the pun!). If that sounds like you, perhaps thinking through this suggestion a bit more might be worth your time.

Robert Sammon Financial Services

Every issue, I spotlight a talented colleague from my growing network. This issue, it’s Robert J. Sammon, CLU, ChFC, LUTCF, founder of Robert Sammon Financial Services.

Robert is a 20-year veteran of the insurance industry. His focus is on assisting companies in the selection, implementation, and servicing of group health insurance plans. With the recent passage of the group health care bill, it has never been more critical to align yourself with a competent, seasoned, ethical and leveraged broker who will be able to guide you through the myriad changes coming your way. Rob can help you learn more about the changes to the law and whether your current plan is truly the best option for your company. He can provide you with an update about which plans are the most competitive on both a premium and benefit level.

Also, think about the level of service you are getting from your current broker. Rob is often hired not to necessarily make immediate plan changes, but because people realize that they can obtain a far higher level of service from him for the same price they are currently paying.

A conversation with Rob will provide some insight as to what is happening in the industry and possibly save you some money on your health care plan. Call him at 212.242.8002 or email rsammon@sammonfinancial.com.

5-4-4 Executive
Coaching

Create a Space for Strategic Thinking

You’ve heard of 911, 411, even 311. Now’s there’s 5-4-4, but before I get to that…

As an executive or business owner, you are probably busy putting out fires or responding to other people’s challenges, issues, requests… Your inbox may be overflowing and the demands on your time are increasingly greater. It may even seem like work is encroaching more and more on your personal life. It can be difficult–perhaps impossible–for you to find a way to think strategically.

Don’t get me wrong, putting out fires is great, but if that’s most of what you spend your time doing, all you end up with at the end of the day is a charred landscape. Depressing!

As an executive & business coach, I provide you with the space to think about your top issues. I offer you an objective yet challenging perspective. And I create a level of accountability that helps you stay on track and move toward your objectives.

So what’s this about 5-4-4?! Be one of the first three executives to contact me in April and receive five coaching sessions for the price of four. That’s 5 for 4 or 5-4-4.

Use this offer for yourself or send it to a colleague, a direct report — anyone you think is serious about being more focused, fulfilled, and satisfied with their work and their life.

Call (516.216.4233) or email to book YOUR sessions.

Paul McGinniss Work Business Life CoachDear Paul,

Welcome to the Winter 2009 NEWS-you-can-use-LETTER

Can you believe it’s 2010?!? I can’t. But I believe this will be a year of firsts: first year of the new decade, first year of a US economic recovery, first year as a dad (really!). I’m excited about all of the possibilities.

So rather than talk about resolutions, let’s focus on continuing our journey toward success, happiness, fulfillment. In fact, let’s focus on living this year like it was our last, even though it’s a first!

Did I confuse you? Read on.

Coach’s Corner
Starting at the End

Paul First Marathon FinishWhy is it that some goals seem to never materialize?

What I’ve noticed from my own and from others’ experiences is that an emotional connection to the goal is necessary for its achievement.

Many times, people create what I call “should” goals for themselves: “I should eat better,” “I should manage my time more effectively,” “I should be more patient with my employees” and on and on.

The problem is, it takes energy to focus on and work toward a goal and there needs to be a strong payoff for the brain and body to expend that energy. The brain’s normal state is to remain on alert for threats. As soon as we start to think, we’re using up precious resources and energy. The brain will resist this.

Create enough of an emotional pull (achieve a positive) OR push (avoid a negative) and you will create internal motivation.

The brain doesn’t want to do the work but it loves the payoff of having done the work — and it wants more of that payoff.

One way to create that emotional pull or push is to picture yourself on your deathbed and consider your life if you did or didn’t accomplish your goal. This will often help you cut to the chase to whether the goal is a true goal or a “should” goal.

Stephen Covey calls it “Begin with the End in Mind.”

I call it good thinking.

Ask the Coach!

“Hey Paul, I’ve got this situation…”

Issue: I’m not excited about my goals. I can’t seem to make any progress.

Coach: As mentioned in the Coach’s Corner above, most of the time when people are not making progress on their goals it is because they are not truly connected to their goals on a deep emotional level. What I mean by that is a person is probably not excited about achieving the goal, he is not inspired by it, it is not materially or tangibly significant for her to accomplish. (Sometimes, it’s simply an untimely goal.)

There are hundreds of continuous external messages bombarding us to behave a certain way, to look a certain way, to fit in, to keep up. This can result in setting goals that we think are important but we end up disconnected from. For instance, when was the last time you achieved a goal you set and felt nothing or even let down? I believe this is because it is not YOUR goal, it is society’s goal for you. Make sense?

SUGGESTION: Start thinking about what would truly make your life worthwhile and examine your current goals in light of that. Consider whether the goals you currently have are your true goals or society’s goals for you. Then reset and reconnect to your goals!

Most of us wrestle with similar situations and questions. If you have  a burning question or issue you want to resolve, send it to me and we’ll address it here.

Who checks your thinking?

Most busy executives are not getting the information they need to properly manage their operation. Valuable information gets watered down (or totally stifled) the further “up the chain” it goes. After all, no one likes to give the boss bad news. Unfortunately, bad information can only results in bad decisions and even worse results.

As an executive, when was the last time you had the space to think through your top issues, an objective yet challenging voice in the room, and a level of accountability that facilitated staying on track and achieving your objectives? If your answer is seldom to never, perhaps it’s time you tried working with an executive coach.

I understand, times are still tough. Be one of the first four executives to contact me and receive a 50% discount off the 2009 rate for your first coaching session!

The rate for an executive coaching session usually starts around $250 but the first four executives who contact me by Feb 28 will receive it for only $125 that’s a small investment for a potentially significant payoff!

Coach’s Corner
“Your Brain at Work”

For those of you who have heard me speak about coaching, you know I use a unique brain-based approach that was created by Results Coaching Systems and its founder, David Rock.

Your Brain at Work book coverDavid is a powerhouse of a thinker and has released two new books this year. I bought both. The book I’m mentioning here is “Your Brain at Work.” It tells the story of “Emily” and “Paul” and allows us to travel inside their brains as they attempt to sort through the vast quantities of information they’re presented with, figure out how to prioritize it, organize it, and act on it. The book shows how it’s possible for Emily and Paul–and thus you the reader–not only to survive in today’s overwhelming work environment, but to succeed in it and still feel energized and accomplished at the end of the day.

Does that interest you? If yes, pick up this book. Why? Because I feel so strongly about the work David is doing and the promise it holds for us at work and, more importantly, in life, that I believe you need to and will benefit from reading it.

Ask the Coach!
“Hey Paul, I’ve got this situation…”

Most of us wrestle with similar situations and questions. If you have a burning question or issue you want to resolve, send it to me and we’ll address it here.

Issue: I’m feeling overwhelmed and unfocused.

Coach: How clear are you about what it is you’re trying to accomplish or where you’re heading in life, at work, with your relationships, health, faith…? If you’re crystal clear, how connected are you emotionally to accomplishing these things? By when? How?

Most of the time, when we are unfocused or overwhelmed it’s because we have not clearly and specifically identified a significant emotional goal (or goals), which usually causes us to say “yes” to anything to fill that void. We’re busy, but not fulfilled. Saying “yes” to everything quickly fills our plate to overflowing. I like to say, there is no tool to help you get 12 pounds in a 10 pound bag. You’ve got to lose 2 pounds (or more!). Stepping back and identifying some truly inspiring goals is a way of clearing the plate and getting focused and back in control of your time.

Welcome to our Summer 2009 NEWS-you-can-use-LETTER.
This issue is all about stop, drop (what you’re doing) and check-in.

And it’s about beginning a formal dialog within the community of this newsletter’s expanding readership (that’s you) to begin making the kinds of concrete positive changes in your work and lives you’ve been thinking of and perhaps not realizing (yet!).

Let’s get started!

Coach’s Corner
What’s Going On?!

My sister, Nancy, recently got married and my brothers, my wife and a friend and I were “the band” for the reception party (we rocked!). One of my sister’s favorite songs is by 4 Non-Blondes and it’s called “What’s Up” or as we affectionately call it, “What’s Going On?”

Given summer has recently arrived (in my neck of the world) and we’ve quietly slipped into July, now is a good time to be asking yourself, “What’s going on” — with your work, your career, your department (if you’re a manager), your business unit (if you’re a leader)…

accountingTaking time to step away from tactical decisions and check-in on your goals and strategies is critically valuable time. Stephen Covey calls it Quadrant 2 time. Some people think it’s a waste of time, sitting around and thinking. Let me ask you, if your actions were taking you off-track from your goals, wouldn’t you want to know sooner rather than later? Here’s a few more questions to think about for your mid-year review:

– What are your specific written goals and strategies?

– How on- or off-track are you at this point?

– What will you do to course correct, if necessary?
– What other opportunities can you take advantage of or create?
– Who will check your thinking?
– Who will ask you the tough questions about your your plans?

These are just a few of the questions you might ask yourself. The main thing is, are you heading in the right direction and how objective is your viewpoint?

If you’re interested in finding out more about what it’s like to work with a professionally trained and certified coach, feel free to contact me with your questions by email or by phone, 516.216.4233, no strings attached.

Ask the Coach!

“Hey Paul, I’ve got this situation…”

Each of us is faced with issues, questions, challenges, problems, opportunities, dilemmas… Some times, what we need is to step away from it all and clear a space to think through it–differently. That’s what this section is all about.

There’s a notion that roughly 80% of what small business owners face are similar issues. The other 20% is specific to their industry, niche, or product.

I believe the same is true of people, that 80% of what you deal with on a day-to-day basis is similar to what others are managing: money, health, relationships, family, hobbies, energy, friendships, living spaces, personal effectiveness. So one person’s question usually benefits many other people.

This is where you can create that space and ask those questions AND it will remain completely confidential (no actual names will be used).

So if there’s an issue or opportunity you’ve been wrestling with for longer than you care to admit, send it to me and we’ll address it in my Blog (for the sake of time) and present it in the next issue (for the benefit of our readers).

Go ahead, ASK THE COACH!

Midtown Networking Group

Usually, I use this space to recognize one very special colleague in my growing network. This issue, I’m recognizing a bunch of colleagues that make-up the Midtown Networking Group.

Mind you, this is no ordinary networking group. This is a group of people totally committed to each other’s business success and focused on building long-term relationships.

These are also not your typical “got a lead/get a lead” or “how many you got” networking meetings. We seek first to build a relationship, then to help build each other’s businesses.

The group represents over two dozen non-competing professional categories. If you’re in need of a particular resource or are unhappy with a current vendor, check us out. You’ll probably find someone (or two or three) of value.

Paul McGinniss Work Business Life CoachDear Paul,

Welcome to our Spring 2009 NEWS-you-can-use-LETTER.
This issue includes information to help you stay focused regardless of your circumstances. Let’s face it, there will always be something to challenge you, tempt you, stall you, derail you. And there will (almost) never be “the perfect time” for anything.
My hope is that by using the information in this issue, you will think new thoughts that create new actions that generate better results faster than if you simply applied your existing hardwiring.

Coach’s Corner
Is It time for a Business Coach

accountingAn article appeared on a sales and marketing website asking, “Do you need a business coach when budgets are tight?”
You might expect a trite answer. Instead, the article presents the value of using a business coach and how it’s different than working with a business consultant and it offers 5 questions (though it says 6) to ask yourself to help make the decision.
Need more info about working with an executive business coach, check out the 2009 Sherpa Executive Coaching Survey.
Finally, I would say that working with a coach is sometimes the ONLY time a person gets to step out of their work and take a more objective look at what they’re doing and where’s it’s taking them. Clients are often surprised at the results they get by “creating a space” to work with a coach on a regular basis. Even small changes can create big results.
If you’re interested in finding out more about what it’s like to work with a coach, feel free to contact me with your questions by email or by phone, 516.216.4233, no strings attached.

Divorce Coaching for Men

Now, on its own!

Divorce Coaching 4 Men logoAs a reader of the quarterly News-you-can-use-letter, you know about my specialty divorce coaching program for men. Given it is such a unique program focused completely on a life coaching issue — helping men move more easily and quickly through the fog of divorce — I have decided to break out the program as a business in its own right and start a separate newsletter to directly serve this group of men. Trish, my new bride and creative director of Agapito Design Studio, has even created a new logo for the business (see above)!
What does this mean for you?! Two things.
1. If you know any men who are going into, through, or coming out of a divorce, please forward this newsletter to them so they can sign-up for the new Divorce Coaching 4 Men newsletter. It will have resources, tips, and suggestions to help men regain clarity and focus and start moving forward with their NewLife.
2. In place of DC4m in this newsletter will be a new section called “ASK THE COACH!“, where you can ask whatever questions you want and I’ll answer as many as I can in the next News-you-can-use-letter.
Go ahead, ASK THE COACH!

Head Shot bw

Dear Paul,

Welcome to our Winter 2008 NEWS-you-can-use-LETTER.

A recent morning run reminded me in no small way that winter has indeed arrived in the New York area. The "Real Feel" temperature was 6 degrees Fahrenheit.

Most people think I’m crazy to run in this weather — and I would be if I didn’t prepare properly. In fact, it could be dangerous and even life-threatening if I didn’t take adequate precautions.

What does this have to do with you? Simple, if there’s something you want to do and people are telling you you’re crazy, you might be. Or, they might just be unenlightened about what it is that you’re doing. Set your sights, get educated, plan, prepare and then get moving.

Life is short and meant to be lived — even in the dead of winter (wink).

Coach’s Corner
Create Momentum

winter tree

For some people, winter can be depressing. There’s even a medical term for it. Honest!

Whether it’s the brutally cold weather, the short days and lack of sunshine, the madness of holiday shopping crowds, the tendency to isolate oneself and hunker down at home, the anonymity of heavily dressed people bundled in bulky grey and black winter clothes, it can make one long for spring.

So how do you create or keep a sense of momentum throughout the winter at work or in your own life?

Focus.

A while back, I wrote a series of three articles on Achieving the Elusive. The first article dealt with Focus. It was no accident that I chose focus as the first article. There are many things you can focus on, some that are helpful, some that are not. Vision is the highest level of focus. Having a vision creates momentum.

Want to get moving? Set your focus NOW, think about it daily, flood your thoughts with your vision, put up reminders wherever you will constantly see them, and you can marshal the forces necessary to generate and sustain momentum even in the midst of the harshest winter.

This is the work I do with my clients and how I strive to live my own life. Crystallize your Vision, create your Plan, and then (and only then) get into Action.

You may just find that by keeping your focus high-level and constantly on your Vision that winter flies by and you wake up to the chirping of birds and the explosion of color that is spring.

Divorce Coaching for Men
Surviving the Fog of Divorce

man in fog

Dealing with the prospect or the reality of a divorce is one of the most difficult experiences a person can endure. One of the things that makes it even more difficult is that you are actually experiencing two journeys at the same time: a fact-based or logical/head journey and a feeling-based or emotional/heart journey. (This by the way applies to most things we experience in life.)

Failing to deal with either of these aspects (or, God forbid, both!) will more than likely prolong your agony, your pain, and your suffering, and will delay your recovery. Getting real-life practical help to guide you through both journeys of your breakup will help you regain your footing, create more focus, and move through The Fog of Divorce(TM) more quickly and with more peace and less pain.

Doesn’t that sound like a better option than toughing it out?

If you (or someone you know) are looking for help, support, resources or one-to-one coaching as you move into, through, or out of a divorce, send me an email or call me at 516.216.4233. I’ve been there, I made it through — and I can help you do the same.

A Prosperity Workshop for 2009
Create Abundance in Life and Work

Woman succeeding

Are you as sick and tired of all the doom and gloom in the media as I am?!! How about some GOOD news!

Instead of screaming, "UNCLE!", I’ve decided to do something about it. I’ve developed The Law of Attraction: A Prosperity Workshop for 2009 (based on the best-selling book/DVD "The Secret"). The goal of the workshop is to gather a group of business people who want to focus on and create prosperity in 2009.

In the workshop, we will walk through the DVD one section at a time and work together to create action plans around each concept presented. We will also create accountability partnerships to keep you on track and a Members Only Forum for participants to share their progress and achievements after the workshop.

Seating for the workshop is limited and will be offered on a first-come first-served basis.

Reserve my seat!

Our Platinum Sponsor and host for the workshop is my good friend Michael Spinelli of Cashin Spinelli & Ferretti, LLC: Surety Consultants and Construction Managers. They are providing the conference room and dinner/drinks (this will be a working dinner).

Remember, seating is limited and offered on a first-come first-served basis. Click here to reserve a seat!

This is the time of year to clear the decks and get focused. It is with that in mind that I spotlight three trusted friends and business colleagues: Justin Bridge, founder of Bridge Leadership, Mary Carlomagno, founder of Order period, and Ken San Pedro, owner/operator of The Carpet Cleaning Guy.

I had the pleasure of being virtually introduced to Justin Bridge through Olivia Lockwood, a mutual colleague (and an amazing person in her own right). Justin is a leadership coach and founder of Bridge Leadership, based in the UK. I spent several weeks learning from Justin in a virtual tele-classroom for a pilot program of his. Justin has that rare combination of tremendous intelligence and heart: not only does he want to make a difference, he can. If you’re looking for a leadership coach who walks the talk and can deliver the goods, Justin is your man. Need proof? Click this link to check out Justin’s Christmas 2008 leadership e-zine full of cutting-edge thinking. Then contact him at justin.bridge@bridgeleadership.com to subscribe to the e-zine or to chat about your company’s leadership development needs.

Another trusted friend and colleague, organization expert and author Mary Carlomagno, is the founder and owner of Order period, a company that specializes in clutter control. Her second book, Secrets of Simplicity was just released in November 2008. In this interactive journal, Mary leads readers on a journey toward release and discovery. Guided by the principle that the way you spend your time and money should reflect your true priorities, Secrets of Simplicity shows how to make practical changes to unburden your closets and calendars and make room for what’s really important. Readers can record their successes, as they de-clutter their homes and–in the process–their minds. When it comes to being happy and healthy, less is more. Mary’s philosophy has been featured in Woman’s Day, Redbook, and the Washington Post. Contact Mary at mary@orderperiod.com for a consultation or to ask about either of her books. By the way, the second book mentions me (yes, Paul McGinniss!) as one of her life examples. Thanks, Mary!

Now that you’ve cleared your space, clean it! And for that, my final spotlight colleague, Ken San Pedro, can help you. Ken is the owner of The Carpet Cleaning Guy (TCCG) and founding partner of Qualified Restoration. Ken is a dynamo, a successful business owner, and an amazing networker. He separates himself from the crowd by going the extra mile in his business and in his relationships. TCCG offers carpet/upholstery cleaning, window cleaning, air duct cleaning, tile/grout cleaning and sealing or flood restoration. Qualified Restoration provides help to those suffering from damage due to fire, flood, or any other significant event. Both services cover residential and commercial jobs. Ken is offering a $25 gift certificate toward any of his The Carpet Cleaning Guy services for Eastern Long Island residents. Use it yourself or give it to a friend. Contact Ken at 866-We- Do-Rugs (866-933-6784) for your certificate and your carpet cleaning needs or at 888-244-2549 for any restoration needs.

Response-Able Consulting uses a brain- based coaching model to help successful businesspeople pursue lives of intention and fulfillment. We are also proud to offer a one-of-a-kind Divorce Coaching Program for Men.

"The most successful executives carefully select understudies. They don't strive to do everything themselves. They train and trust others. This leaves them foot-free, mind-free, with time to think.
